One of the major limitations for the printer that has just 100 sheets of paper, with no option to upgrade. That should be enough for personal use most, but unless you print very few pages, it's too little to share the printer on the office network, although you can connect using either an Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Partly makes up for the low capacity is 20-sheet tray for 4 to 6 photo paper. The second tray lets you switch between plain and photo paper without having to swap paper in the main tray. Setup, speed, and the MFC-J870DW Quality Output is standard fare. For my tests, I connected to the network using the Ethernet port, and install the driver on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite which I clocked the printer (using QualityLogic hardware and software for time) at 4.7 pages per minute (ppm). Which makes it faster than either MFC-J825DW, at 4.0 pages per minute (ppm) or the Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce WF-3520, at 4.4 ppm. It is also regarded as fast for the price. Photo speed is also quite fast, averaging 59 seconds for a 4 by 6.
The output quality is equal or better across the board. Text in particular is at the high end of the range that covers all but a few inkjet MFP, so it easily good enough for most business needs. Graphical output is good enough for internal business use. Depending on how critical eye you have, you may or may not consider it good enough for PowerPoint handouts or the like as well. Photos equivalent dead, making them suitable for what you would expect from drugstore prints.
